Journey to the center of the crawl space: what is Encapsulation and how does it work?

crawl space

my wife and I bought our first home at the end of December last year. As much as we liked the freedom of owning a home, we quickly realized that there are responsibilities that we had not yet considered. One of the first things we noticed is that the House, which is about 100 years old, has had a crawlspace. And during this first past 100 years, the former owners had become accustomed to a wide variety of junk out there - ranging from the remains wood and bricks of old chairs and forgotten car tires. It was a mess. The attic has a dirt floor, and there were several places where the insulation has been implemented head downstairs.

, we were worried about the State of our attic, so we reached out for some professional advice. Matt Leech, founder of CrawlSpaceRepair.com, specializes in products for the encapsulation of attic. He explains that the encapsulation refers to the installation of a vapour barrier and seal the ground clay, which will help keep the pipes freeze, improve the quality of the air in your home and make your home easier (and cheaper) to heat and cool.

what is more, it is that encapsulation really transform your attic into a usable space. Instead of having a dirty hole under your House, you have a large and dry storage area.

Leech said that owners face major problems with crawlspaces are mold, the smell of the attic, standing water and high humidity. In order to keep the belly of your House in excellent condition, you should be taking precautions and be proactive. One of the best ways to do this is through crawl space encapsulation.

how to encapsulate your house

Encapsulation can be performed by a professional company or completed by the owner. In a video posted by CrawlSpaceRepair.com, we are reminded that if you go with a professional, it will cost you an amount that is "similar to the roof of your House." But if you want to do it yourself, costs are reduced, and you can increase the life of your encapsulation with the best products.

If you plan to go the route of hiring a professional to encapsulate your attic, you must ensure that you are using a company or individual who has experience and who is using the right equipment. According to Leech, "the first place to start is to meet with them and hear what they think is the problem." If it makes sense for you, get a second and third opinion. Before selecting a person, talk to their customers past, recent, and for some years; see if they deliver results. There are a lot of smart people out there who do not have a huge advertising budget. if, however, you're more than a very practical person or DIY-er, you should be able to tackle the project yourself.» To get clear instructions on how to wrap an attic, check out these 10 expert steps to make it a reality.

warnings from Experts

that you work with a professional company or doing this project yourself, make sure that the appropriate materials are used. Specifically, the plastic and tape used to seal the attic and the necessary foundation help to control the amount of moisture in the attic. Too much water could create mold, while too little could cause a structure of floor dry and weakened. And not all plastics are the same.

when looking for encapsulation materials, make sure that the company is actually quality sales they advertise. Some companies will announce more thick 12 mil vapour barrier, but it will only actually 8 mil. According to Leech, this difference will significantly affect the longevity of your attic wrapped. When the plastic research, compare instead the quality by the MSF weight, or the pounds of plastic per 1,000 square feet of the product.

beyond Encapsulation

other encapsulation, you get a dehumidifier or a sump pump in your attic. Leech says that good dehumidifiers will last 8-10 years, while sump pumps will need to be checked every year for the slow response or excessive noise. "Current expenditures are really not so bad and can be quite manageable if you are proactive," says Leech.

deep (in the attic)

If you are a regular in your attic or you've never been inside, now would be the perfect time to make it work for you. Get rid of dangers of mold damage and water while you give yourself at the same time additional storage. My wife and I begin the process this summer. Let's start by removing all the waste that was stored there for a century. It's going to do some work, but it'll be worth it.
